WILLIAM GARVEY LIMITED SUSTAINABILITY POLICY

William Garvey Limited is committed to promoting sustainability. Concern for the environment and promoting a broader sustainability agenda are integral to our professional activities and the management of the organisation. We aim to follow and to promote good sustainability practice, to reduce the environmental impacts of all our activities and to help our clients and partners to do the same.

OUR SUSTAINABILITY POLICY IS BASED UPON THE FOLLOWING PRINCIPLES:

To comply with and exceed where practicable all applicable legislation, regulations and codes of practice.

To integrate sustainability considerations into all our business decisions.

To ensure that all staff are fully aware of our Sustainability Policy and are committed to implementing and improving it.

To make clients and suppliers aware of our Sustainability Policy, and encourage them to adopt sound sustainable management practices.

To review, annually report, and to continually strive to improve our sustainability performance.

WORKING PRACTICES AND ADVICE TO CLIENTS

We undertake voluntary work with the local community and make donations to seek to offset carbon emissions from our activities.

We ensure that any associates that we employ take account of sustainability issues in their advice to clients.

PRACTICAL STEPS

In order to put these principles into practice Bill has planted over 3,000 mixed native trees and intends to plant an acre of trees per year in the future. At present there are over four acres of new walnut and oak trees along with newly planted ash and willow which are used for heating fuel on site. Trees cut down for heating will be replaced on a continual basis.

Heating for the workshop is on a sustainable basis with the use of wood burning stoves. All fuel is either grown on site or from off cuts, reducing our fuel miles to zero.

Recycling on site is key to sustainability: all plastics, paper, cardboard, metals, batteries and printer cartridges are recycled appropriately with all members of the team being aware of our policy.

We strive to minimise our use of paper and other office consumables, for example by double-siding all paper used and reusing any waste paper for note taking. We constantly attempt to identify opportunities to reduce waste within the office.

As far as possible we arrange for the reuse or recycling of office waste, including batteries, paper, computer supplies and redundant equipment.

We reduce the energy consumption of office equipment by purchasing energy efficient equipment and with good housekeeping.

We ensure that sourced timber, and any other timber products, are from well-managed, sustainable sources and are Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certified wherever possible.

Whenever possible we re-use and recycle materials and packaging.

We promote the use of staff car share within the company to save fuel miles.

We use public transport to attend meetings, site visits etc., apart from in exceptional circumstances where the alternatives are impractical or cost prohibitive.

We avoid physically travelling to meetings etc., where alternatives are available and practical, and employ efficient timing of meetings to avoid multiple trips.

We seek to promote the benefits of adopting fair employment practices through the supply chain to our partner organisations, suppliers and the market.

For William Garvey sustainability is about achieving more with less use of resources, reducing our climate change impact, and protecting our heritage and natural surroundings for future generations.

I would like to say how pleased I was with the quality of the work undertaken by William Garvey, the attention to detail was heartening.  Stanley Johnson.
