Computer Aided Design
Our drawing office needs to communicate clearly with our clients and with our furniture makers. In our own design work we use an electronic solid modelling system. This produces three dimensional images that are readily comprehensible to both groups.
With solid modelling the draughtsman actually builds the object, albeit virtually. It is not simply a drawing of the surface of the object, it is truthful all the way through. Thus it becomes possible to consider something in detail from all viewpoints and to check that it works properly. Further, it guarantees that all the sections taken from the model are perfectly consistent with one another. In short, a method of working that removes much of the uncertainty that accompanies making things for the first time.
But if we are sent fully resolved drawings then they can go straight to the workshop for setting out at the bench. Different clients, different needs.
