Private wellness space

A home spa, gym, pool and treatment rooms for a country home on the edge of the Peak District
Private Wellness Space – Sheffield

This commission for repeat client James Brookman Design began with a requirement for a spa room and evolved into a holistic wellness space and pool. The homeowner’s brief was for an exceptional wellness suite that would support their health goals and remind them of time spent on their yacht in the Greek Isles.

A wellness retreat

At the core of the project sits the pool hall and spa. Here, a timber-clad wet spa offers several distinct showers and facilities including an AquaMoon shower, a hydrotherapy vortex shower, a comfort and leg shower, a horizontal shower with Libra wet table, a foot bath and an ice fountain, all supplied by Cheshire Wellness. At the other end of the pool, sliding Japanese Shoji screens lead through to adjoining treatment rooms, a hairdressing salon, dry spa and gym.

Wood for wellness

The timber and other materials throughout the wellness space, and in the pool hall and wet spa area in particular, had to be practical in both heat and high humidity. Each material was carefully specified and designed by the William Garvey team to fit the design brief and have resistance to these conditions. The final palette included bleached and stained teak, mother of pearl, coconut shell, carbon fibre, polished leather, and oiled teak for the yacht-style decking.

Each of the bleached and stained teak wall and ceiling panels around the pool and wet spa area was carefully selected and laid out in a randomised pattern with a vertical grain. We added niches for towels and storage cupboards, and crafted console tables to sit at each side of the main pool. Our craftspeople designed and crafted the oiled teak decking, faithful to authentic yacht construction with its precise planking, rubber trim, and intricate curves. We wrapped the six columns in the pool hall with carbon fibre to emulate the form and feel of a yacht mast. A leather wrapped bar with teak bar stools by William Garvey sit to one side of the pool.

Siminetti crafted an 8m-wide mural from mother of pearl and silver birch along one of the curved walls with a scene inspired by the client’s love of yachting and their experiences in the Mediterranean.

Tranquil space

The seamless integration of all health spa fittings and complex mechanical and electrical hardware was a significant undertaking. However we embraced and overcame the challenge through our methodical and thorough approach, and deep collaboration with the design team and other artisans working on the project. The resulting tranquil wellness space is a harmonious blend of technical precision and design, and a testament to William Garvey’s ability to translate complex visions into tangible, enduring spaces.
