Expert knowledge and intuitive
understanding of materials

Detail is where the difference lies

The complex nature of materials

At William Garvey, our materials expertise extends deep beyond the surface. Our knowledge of materials is a profound understanding built through years of experience.

Every project we undertake demands careful consideration of how materials perform visually and structurally, in different environments and over time. Our team has decades of experience working with solid timber, veneers and specialist materials and finishes.

Crafted with precision and purpose

Wood remains our most used material, we understand how timber moves and changes depending on moisture, temperature and time. Each project and piece of furniture we craft from timber relies heavily on our knowledge of timber seasoning, preparation, selection and performance. With veneer, we have greater control over the finish than solid timber and can sequence or bookmatch the grain for a more refined result. We always advise on whether solid timber or veneer is better suited to each setting.

Materials expertise at William Garvey extends beyond timber to metal, carbon fibre, glass, leather and more. Bespoke furniture maker designer

Thoughtfully designed. Carefully made.

Beyond wood, we work with a wide range of decorative materials including leather, metal, glass, carbon fibre, stone and fabric. If a material proposed by a client is unfamiliar to us at first, we treat that as part of the process. Designers and homeowners often bring us ideas including experimental and new materials, and we explore what is possible. We source samples, test finishes and advise on durability, suitability and care.

Collaboration is at the heart of every project

Many unique finishes are the result of close cooperation with our network of specialist artisans but the responsibility for how the piece performs lies with us. We regularly collaborate with artists and craftspeople whose materials demand a different kind of attention.

Whatever the brief, our approach is consistent. We study the material, understand its behaviour and build accordingly. This knowledge is embedded in our design and manufacturing process, giving clients the confidence that what we make will last and look as it should for years to come.
