Bespoke joinery for two wellness-focused bathrooms, bedroom furniture and a kitchen island for a top floor apartment in Bath
Bespoke joinery and furniture in penthouse – Bath

Set within a Grade I listed Georgian building in the heart of Bath, this penthouse had been converted from a historic loft space above a former shop. Working for repeat customer, architect and designer Nico Rensch of Red Button, William Garvey was commissioned to execute two wellness-focused bathrooms, bespoke bedroom furniture and a substantial kitchen island.

Material mastery

The zen-like master bathroom is a rare example of material singularity. In a space where waterproof surfaces are typically visually distinct, this room presents as a single, unified ensemble. Drawing on a tradition that dates back centuries, we crafted every element from waterproof teak. The 4sqm shower tray and duckboards, the meticulously jointed wall and ceiling cladding, sink and water-tight bath, were all crafted in our workshops.

Our Teak GEO Deep Bath, accompanied by a hand-finished seat and stool, forms the centrepiece of a room designed for quietude. Technical precision was required to ensure the large format teak wall tiles met exactly, creating a seamless transition between the vertical surfaces, ceiling and the floor.

The second bathroom follows an even more pared-back aesthetic, featuring a Teak Long WAVE Basin and a standard GEO bath, with teak tiles arranged in a disciplined horizontal framework.

Handcrafted

The kitchen presents a striking contrast in form and texture. We sourced and handcrafted a substantial cantilevered breakfast bar from a six inch thick slab of waney edge oak. Retaining its natural knots and sapwood, the timber was worked entirely by hand as it’s scale exceeded the capacity of our workshop machinery. This organic form provides a tactile counterpoint to the precision engineered lines of the white Bulthaup B3 kitchen.

Clean lines

In the bedrooms, the design language shifts to a rhythmic arrangement of interlocking oak lathes. For the master suite, we combined solid oak battens with a dark stain to integrate the bed, bedside tables, and a full-height headboard into a single, cohesive structure. The bedframe rests on a recessed pedestal, creating a subtle floating effect, enhanced by integrated LED lighting. A similar approach was taken in the second bedroom using oak veneers in a lighter stain.

The material palette is rounded out by internal sliding doors crafted from smoked quarter cut eucalyptus and fitted with recessed brass fixtures.

Throughout the penthouse, the combination of teak, eucalyptus and oak in various cuts and tones creates a quietly contemporary environment that sits comfortably within the historic envelope of the building.

“The precision on the work is astonishing.” Penthouse owner.
